Roland TB-303

We did it. We finally added a Roland TB-303 to the collection after resisting for so long. These divide musicians almost as much as Behringer gear.

When they were released in 1982 as a bass accompaniment for the TB-606 drum machine they were a huge flop and by the mid 1980s they could be purchased for a few hundred bucks. Then in 1985 DJ Pierre in Chicago picked one up and when he used it in “Acid Tracks” in 1987, the signature sound of acid house and techno was born – and second-hand TB-303s started to get expensive again.

The late 1990s was “303” peak thanks to Fatboy Slim, Prodigy and even Madonna and most people associate the 303 with the 1990s and 2000s dance scene.

By the late 2000s the squelchy and chirpy filter sound of the TB-303 had been done to death so they became uncool.

But into the 2010s, the sound became “retro” and synth collectors moved in driving prices to stratospheric levels (ridiculous for a cheap-looking silver box only 30cm long).

Make yourself some retro dance music in Synth Pod C.
